Charts

The Charts tab of a report turns reporting data into interactive charts. Each chart is built from an aggregation that the ioki Platform calculates. This page explains how to read and control the Charts tab. For what aggregations, measures, dimensions, and release stages are, see Aggregations.

  1. Open the Charts tab
  2. Choose a measure
  3. Choose a time range
  4. Set the bucket size
  5. Chart types
    1. Read a cross table
  6. Download the chart data
  7. No data and error states

Open the Charts tab

Open a report first (see Running a report). A report opens in two tabs:

Select Charts to see the charts. The Charts tab appears only when the report has at least one aggregation.

Choose a measure

An aggregation can expose more than one measure. When it does, a row of measure tabs appears above the chart. Each tab is one measure, and selecting a tab redraws the chart for that measure.

A measure that is not yet stable shows a release-stage badge next to its tab, such as Beta or Open beta. A stable measure shows no badge. The badge reflects the release stage of the aggregation the measure belongs to.

Choose a time range

Every chart covers a time range. You set the range in two ways.

  • Preset date range. A dropdown offers ready-made ranges, such as the last few days, the last months, or a period that runs up to today. The dropdown also has a Custom option.
  • Custom. Select Custom to set the start and end dates yourself with the date fields.

The available presets depend on the aggregation.

Set the bucket size

The Bucket size control groups the data into time buckets along the chart. The available bucket sizes are:

  • Hourly
  • Daily
  • Weekly
  • Monthly
  • Quarterly
  • Yearly

Each option shows how many buckets the current time range produces, for example Daily - 30 buckets. ioki Reporting selects a bucket size automatically from the length of the time range, and you can change it. The Bucket size control appears only when the aggregation offers more than one bucket size. A bucket size that would produce too much data for the selected range is disabled.

If the chosen time range is too large to load, ioki Reporting shows a “Time span too large” message. Choose a smaller time range or a coarser bucket size.

Chart types

The Charts tab draws each aggregation with the visualization that fits its data:

  • Bar chart. One bar per time bucket.
  • Stacked bar chart. Bars split into stacked series, so you can compare parts within each bucket.
  • Cross table. A grid colored by value that breaks data down across two dimensions, such as an hour-of-day against a day-of-week pattern. See Read a cross table.

The chart type is set by the aggregation; you do not choose it.

Read a cross table

A cross table shows a two-dimensional aggregation as a colored grid, also called a heatmap. It is useful for spotting patterns across two dimensions at once, such as which hours of which weekdays are busiest.

  • Rows and columns. Each row is one bucket of the first dimension, and each column is one bucket of the second dimension. For example, rows can be days of the week and columns can be hours of the day.
  • Cells. Each cell is the value where a row and a column meet. The cell shows the value as a rounded number.
  • Color intensity. The color of a cell scales with its value. Higher values are more saturated and lower values are lighter, so the busiest cells stand out. The intensity is relative to the largest value in the grid.
  • Tooltips. Point to a cell to see a readable label for the row and column and the exact value. When an axis represents hours of the day, the label shows a time range, such as the hour from one clock time to the next.

A cross table reflects the measure and time range you selected, the same as the other chart types.

The chart rounds cell values to whole numbers for readability. To see values to two decimal places, use Export.

Download the chart data

Select Export above the chart to download the chart’s series as a CSV file. The download uses your current measure, time range, bucket size, and filters. This is a quick export of the chart you are viewing. For the full report export, see Exporting data.

For a bar chart or stacked bar chart, the CSV has one row per time bucket, with a column for each series.

For a cross table, the CSV writes the grid with one row per series and row bucket. Each row starts with the series name and the row-bucket label, followed by one column for each column bucket. The export writes values to two decimal places, so it is more precise than the on-screen cells, which show a rounded whole number.

No data and error states

  • “No data”. When the selected measure, filters, and time range return nothing, the chart area shows “No data” with the note that there is no data for the selected filters. Widen the time range or change the filters.
  • “Could not load chart”. When the chart fails to load, ioki Reporting shows “Could not load chart” with an option to try again later.
